Num 16:38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
What I find so very interesting here, is that they were offered to the Lord and they are Hallowed (Holy) despite the fact that they were offered incorrectly, by the wrong people, for the wrong reason, yet because they were offered to the Lord they were holy.
God is setting up His plan here, that offerings are to be made by the Levites, that incense is to be burned by the Levites. The sons of Korah did not like that and, of course, they assumed it was Moses and not God making these decisions.
God used this incident to take the 250 censers and had them beaten out to plates by the metalworkers and made to cover the altar that all of Israel, forever, would know that the Levites and ONLY the Levites were to perform these duties. Aaron was to be blessed by God for his service and his line were to be the ones who spoke for God, just as Moses asked God way back at the beginning of the Exodus to send Aaron to speak for him.
They stood against Moses, and Aaron and by extension God Himself, and God calls them sinners. Why? For they were full of pride, they tried to set themselves up as the authority not Moses. They did not consult God, they did not "hear" from the Lord, for if they had inquired of Him they would know Moses was God's man.
Yet to hear from God they would have had to go to Moses and Aaron and they could not do that for then they would hear what Moses wanted them to hear, right? Wrong, we are told earlier that Moses is the most meek man, Moses would have spoke truth from God even if it meant he (Moses) was wrong.
God's man is precious to Him, be careful who you speak out against, whom you rise up against. Be sure to inquire of the Lord God before you accuse God's Man.
Hirelings, be certain you are not accusing the Shepherd sent by God. God brings the shepherds, man hires hirelings.
The sons of Korah have a memorial to them and it is a memorial of disgrace, a reminder of their sin.
