Many times a thought hits me and it is a thought, an idea and I have to flesh it out, make it of substance. Today was one of those days.
Exo 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Don't come any closer Moses, take off you shoes for you are on Holy Ground. Wait, what? Mt Horeb also known as Mt Sinai, is holy ground? Why might that be? For the burning bush? Or because God will be there in person in just a few chapters? God makes the ground Holy, nothing else. Have you ever stopped to consider that at one point Holy/unholy ground is connected? There is a line where the area touched by God stops and regular ground starts. Holy/unholy.
Exo 19:17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
Exo 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
Exo 20:18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
His presence is what makes it Holy. His presence is awe inspiring. His presence will scare you, for He is Holy. His presence will cause you to reflect on who you are and how you want to be more like Him.
Perhaps this is why we no longer honor anything as Holy. For God is not among us, we do not know His Spirit, we do not require His presence? We are just fine without Him because that means we can live as we want, and call it of God. After all if we do not know God we can not know what He wants us to do or how.
While I was considering this, something else occurred to me. When watching some horror movies we hear of evil and how unholy it is. Unholy creatures and demons, unholy rituals etc.
Yet is not unholiness everywhere God is not? If a church has no idea of who God is, is it not unholy? If a person is so totally opposite God, are they not unholy? If someone does not know Jesus and His gift of salvation are they not unholy? If a person is not of God they are unholy.
My point here is not to call out everyone and everything unholy, but to call our attention to the thought of God is Holy.
Here is the next extension of that thought. The Children of Israel, God's Chosen people, the ones He personally led out of the land of slavery, of pain, and turmoil, did they not have extremely limited access to God? They could not bow their heads and enter the throne room of Grace.
2Ch 5:13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;
They had the Glory of God in the Holy of Holies here on earth with them yet they could not access it. They had to have a priest, once a year go in.
Have you ever considered how blessed we are? How much this SHOULD mean to us and how little it actually means to us?
We have a chance to go before the Throne of Grace and we can do it anytime day, night, weekend, holiday, and vacation. In the Old Testament Only a High priest could go in to God's area and only once a year. The common man, the everyday person had to go to the priest, they did not have what we have. The everyday person you and me could not go to God. We would have had to go to a priest or prophet. Do you understand yet how blessed we are?
Maybe that's why we have lost the sacredness, the reverence, the holiness of things. We are too comfortable with our idea of God. We are too comfortable with the full time access. Like all other things we have grown complacent and do not seek Him for we have Him right? We know what He thinks and wants. After all if we can access it anytime we want we prioritize it a lot less.
Holy is the place where God is. By that same token then, as we have the Spirit of God indwelling us, does that not make us Holy? Most of us live as if God has no say in our hearts, homes and lives. Most of us do not know nor do we understand a Holy and Just God.
Be ye Holy FOR He is Holy.
Lev 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
Be ye holy For I am the Lord your God. Pretty straight forward right? He wants a Holy Pure Peculiar people.
