In my podcasts and my writings here on facebook and in the books, I have made a point of bringing up those that say "the Lord your God". Nebuchadnezzar, Darius.
Of those who claim to follow Jesus and do not know Him. Simon the Sorcerer, Ananias and Sapphira, Judas.
Yet today I discovered another who says 'The Lord thy God'. I say discovered for this is not one whom you would think would say this. One whom I think you might even be surprised to hear said something along these lines.
This person threw me a curveball, for they have a difficult history yet I never thought of them like this until today.
1Sa 15:30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
1Sa 15:31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
Saul says to Samuel I sinned forgive me that I may worship the Lord Your God. Yes Saul acted as the High Priest and did the sacrifices when Samuel was late (7 days), yes Saul made a rashful oath/curse/ decree that no one should eat causing the troops to sin by eating the meat with blood still in it (they were famished from a full day of chasing the enemy and fighting), yes he kept the best of the spoils when "destroying" the Amalekites, against the word of the Lord.
Yet now, reading what I just read, that Saul says "the Lord thy God" to Samuel gives me a whole new perspective on Saul.
Some of what he has done now comes into a sharper focus.
It is thoroughly amazing to me that a man appointed king over God's chosen, a man who saw miracles, who prophesied when the spirit of God came upon him, a man who was given the victory was not after God's heart or God's purpose.
No if you read you will see that Saul was more afraid of the people and their opinion than he was of God and His Opinion.
When he filled in for Samuel totally against God's Law he blamed the people for they were getting antsy. When he didn't utterly destroy the Amalekites he blames the people.
Saul was more careful for his reputation, his standing among the people that he sinned against God. He made a Rash decree trying to look good and it was ill conceived and led his people into sinning against God.
He was so worried about the people and his standing amongst them that he literally sinned against God.
There is a good lesson here for those of us alive and serving today. If you are more worried about the people and what they think of you and what you do/are doing, time to get out. Make a stand preach a Holy and Just God. Sin is sin still in God's eye. Holy, pure and Just is what He wants from His people. Obedience and Service is what He wants.
I am going to leave it with one last verse Saul probably wished he had.
Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
