1 2Sa 12:14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
I know the account of David and Bathsheba, very well, yet I never noticed this. It really gave me a moment of pause.
As I get older there are verses I am seeing in a whole new light. There are verses that are taking on new perspective as my life experience grows, my view changes and the Word is studied more and more..
The child died, David's house was torn apart by the sword, Uriah was murdered, yes a tragic series of events. Note, however that God says David gave the enemies of the Lord a chance to blaspheme. This is a very big deal to God. David was forgiven of his sin, but because of the damage to God and His Name the child died. The child died, this way absolutely no good would come to David, no joy in these events, from this sin. For the smile and laughter of a child does bring joy no matter how far down you may be.
blaspheme - speak irreverently about God or sacred things.
Have you ever thought of the damage to God and His reputation when you sin? When you lie about your sin and make it less than it is? Yes when you sin you offend your friends and family, yet when a child of God sins He damages the God He serves.
2. Jas 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
I always applied this to sin, yet it means so much more, it is a way to alleviate the bitterness, grudges you are holding. Talking to each other about your weaknesses and hurts and slights (whether perceived or real), this is a very important thing to do for, as we saw in Sunday School yesterday, a grudge can be a ruinous thing.
Not only should we confess our faults one with another, all of us have faults and a shared burden is a lighter burden, it also shows us how better to pray for each other, where to intercede for each other. How better to look out for each other, and it teaches us more compassion for each other as we see each other as we truly are, not as we wish we were, or as we want to be seen.
God is telling us to talk to each other, not necessarily of our sin, but of our failures, of anything that we might be carrying that might not be good for us, such as grudges, hurt, bitterness and slights. To take that pet grudge we have been nursing and make it known to the light of day. For in a multitude of counselors there is wisdom.
3. Eph 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Provoke not your children to wrath, Bring them up in the Lord. Could this also mean do not provoke your children to walk away from God because of your example? Do not provoke them away from God with a heart so hardened that they will feel the Wrath of God on Judgment day because they refused to follow The God that their father "followed"? You know the one who set a bad example for his kids, the one who acted like it was Saturday Night at all times except for the hour he was at church all pious and religious?
I used to think there was one way and one way only to read the Word, yet there is so much deepness to the Word that it is absolutely amazing. The versatility of the Word of God, it's applicability is amazing. The Word of God will never change, the Spirit of God will change you to a better understanding.
