James said that faith without works is dead.
Love without works is meaningless.
If I told my wife I loved her yet never bought flowers or did things for her, she would start to doubt.
So many times we beg God to do this or that, to bless us. To fix a situation etc.
Yet What do we do for Him outside of a quick thank you until our next request?
if you replace faith with love and read it through, it will open your eyes to a whole new meaning.
James 2:20 KJV
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Now when you read it with "love" it makes new sense, urgent sense when you understand it fully in a relationship aspect.
When your kids come to you constantly asking for the things kids ask for and want, yet never do a thing to show you their love, you will feel that they are taking you for granted.
The same with your spouse, if they just constantly take from you it is an unsatisfying relationship.
Now we know God is all powerful and pure, He knows our hearts and minds far better than we ourselves do. So often we assume He knows, we assume He "understands" our gratitude and love so we do not actually have to do anything.
God doesn't just want us to say thanks, He does want praise and Thanksgiving. However, does that end our duty? Does that show our love? Does that prove our love for Him and His sacrifice? No. We must have an outward show, we must act out our love. If there is no outward showing it will make for questions to arise about the inside state.
We can do nothing to "earn" salvation but love without works? There is no evidence of that love.
James 2:26 KJV
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
