Because once we remove ourselves from the immediacy of the decision and all that was going on when we decided, we are then faced with the fear of failure. The farther removed we become from the life altering point of decision, The more we are assailed by the Devil, the mounting bills, the lack of purpose, and the incredible need we have for results.
Psalm 27:13-14
King James Version (KJV)
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.
Once we step out and purpose in our hearts to follow Him in His leading then we must wait on the Lord. We must maintain the course even when our gps says off course because His GPS is what we are relying on.
Psalm 69:6
14 Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Psalm 69:6
Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
King David waited for years for to take his rightful place, Moses was put in place and waited 80 yrs for his purpose, Noah was 500 yrs old when God gave him his task.
When we are in the moment of our situation it is tough for us to see. Once we are removed and look back, or when we look into history, or when we see someone else in the wait, it is far easier to understand. We must remember that as our kids see things in hours and day, we see things in years and decades, God sees things in an even longer time frame.
Christ was here 3 yrs and impacted the World as no one has ever done before. 2000 yrs later and He is still central to all thinking even in the secular world. The length of time we wait or however long our service does not matter. What does matter is we serve, wait on His Will, and stay the course.
Our instant gratification society has absolutely no understanding of waiting. Myself included. We want what we want when we want how we want and WE want it now. However, the proper planning, thinking, and waiting is far more effective even though we are "chomping at the bit". In a race the sprinter can not go the distance they are trained specifically to get there in a hurry. In a marathon runner the endurance, stamina, refreshing, and a steady pace reflective thoughtful frame of mind that keeps the body in rhythm and on course.
2 Timothy 4:6-8
King James Version (KJV)
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
The apostle Paul understood it wasn't a sprint and yes he had far more incentive than we did as He saw Christ in person and received his instructions from God Himself. Hence the apostleship bestowed on him as seeing Christ first hand was a prerequisite and a reason why we do not have apostles today.
However, we do not have the luxury to see the author and finisher of our faith first hand. We have the word and the Holy Spirit. So we must pray and study.... How many times does all we do come back to those two things? We can never know our path, till we study and pray. God will take us where He wants us to go but only when He is ready in His time frame, In His best interests to further His word.
Once we take that first step we have proven our readiness to follow... In the waiting period He will prove our staying power to be certain we are not a candle in the wind but a moon to reflect His glory to a wayward world.
