1 John 1:9KJV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
So if we ask forgiveness we shall be forgiven? that is true.
But at what point is this Rote? Perfunctory? or is this the "Christian" rosary?
IF is the biggest word ever. IF we confess.... by confessing with our mouth (Speaking our sins out loud instead of thinking them) we must see the sin as God sees it- wrong. We must tell Him what we did and why. Once we confess aloud we will see the gravity of the situation. Place it in the category of the 10 commandments. I bore false witness, lusted, stole etc... Don't downplay or trivialize but call a spade a spade here. Once we see it as He sees it we can then fully confess it.
But is that what is meant? is that the full extent of our end? No it isn't. We must not only confess but true repentance means to turn away from a full 180 degrees. .
Matthew 18:21-22
King James Version (KJV)
21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
If we are to forgive our brother that often, then we can expect God's forgiveness to be far greater but this does not give us licensure to sin.
To the contrary confession is good but repentance is the greater. We must turn away, not dwell in that sin state. We are human we shall err, we shall fail but we can not lie there soaked in our sin and be happy!

Romans 6:14-16
King James Version (KJV)
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
If we confess He shall Forgive, If we repent (truly turn from)our sin we shall be restored to His righteousness and the fellowship with our Father. That fellowship is the state we want to dwell in. We want to go to the garden and commune, have a strong prayer life, an effective testimony, and a closer walk with Him.
Until we see things as He does calling sin a sin and not a sickness or a disease or a momentary weakness but sin. Once we get on the same page as He is we can then start maturing and growing as He would have us to.
