Mat 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Mat 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
The Jews in the day of Jesus were resting on the works of Abraham, on the Covenant that God made with Abraham to show that they were justified.
They made the mistake of thinking that what one person did was good enough to carry them, forgetting that God wants a personal decision, a personal relationship with each and every one on earth.
They rested on the laurels of those that had gone before them, laid the groundwork and established a covenant.
Abraham was a friend of God, they forgot that part. They rested in the part where God promised Abraham that they would be a mighty nation blessed and favored of God.
How sad that they saw what someone else did and decided that they did not have to do a thing because their father Abraham had done it for them, but Abraham did not seal their relationship, he sealed his relationship.
God made a covenant with Abraham that Abraham and his family would be a great nation and that his people would be God's people. God and Abraham were friends, that friendship did not pass to future generations unless they befriended God themselves. That God wanted them to come to the relationship with Him of their own accord not because Abraham did.
They did not read and understand and consider the Psalms.
They knew of God, they knew of Abraham, but they did not know and consider the God of Abraham.\
They knew the Law of God, they knew of the God of the Law but they did not consider Him.
To consider means careful thought, typically over a period of time.
They did not consider the Psalms:
Psa 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psa_119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psa_119:145 KOPH. I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.
Abraham knew God with his heart, David knew God with his heart.
The Scribes and Pharisees knew of God. They had no heart for Him, with Him.
A few years ago a man stood and proclaimed America was no longer a Christian nation. All the Christians got upset, and lost their minds over this statement.
Yet I believe he may have been close to being right.
For we know of God, but how many truly know God?
Are we resting on our laurels as the scribes and pharisees? For they were the children of Abraham?
We are America, we are founded on Christian principles, we are founded on freedom of religion.
Well, look around this nation. People throwing God out of the schools, out of government, and churches throwing Him out of them as well.
We have freedom from religion foundations, we have evolution being spoken of as established fact. We have satanism on the rise. We have islam more prevalent in our government and more protected than Christ in this nation.
We the American Christian, know God but we are resting on the laurels of those gone before us, and we do not know God.
We have not hid His word in our hearts and considered it.
For if we had, we would never have let these things happen.
Had we truly hid His words in our hearts and truly considered them there would be no need for us to stand, for people would know where we stand from our very walk.
The way is lost, the path is dark because we no longer allow Him to illuminate our path with the Light of the World.
We are in the dark because we have allowed our light to be hid under a bushel.
You say but there are pockets of revival, I say not revival but the lost coming to repentance.
For a true revival is among the people of God. Awaking in their very hearts, turning to Him, praying for Him to renew our strength and getting us up and out to serve and fight.
Revival is not in the lost. For they have to be born again in the Spirit before they can be revived.
Revival is in the hearts and minds of the Christian, the Christian whose Spirit has withered. The Christian who mind has gone carnal. The Christian whose life more resembles the world than the Christ we proclaim we follow.
The Christian who rested on the accomplishments of those gone before, the Christian who is resting in the knowledge of Salvation and refuses to spread that same message to a lost and dying world.
The Christian who is so inundated with the cares and concerns of this world that they care not for the next.
Laurel resting has affected nation after nation in the history of this world.
Laurel resting has affected so many families who have legacies and money.
Laurel resting is deadly.
We the Christian of these United States need to get off our duffs and get on our knees, shake the cobwebs off our prayer life, clean out our hearts and consider the Word. Hide the Word in our hearts. Use the Word to light our paths, and be the Servants we need to be.
We need to be as the disciples on the road to Emmaus, "did not His words burn in our hearts".
We need to be as David
Psa_119:112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.
We know of God, We even claim to be His.
Yet we do not His Word, We keep not His commandments. We honor Him not in our lives. We can not even be bothered to read and memorize the Scripture.
Do you know Him? Do you consider His Word? Have you hid it in your hearts?
Or are you resting on mommy, daddy, the church?
God will hold you responsible. Not your mom, not your dad, not your church, But you.
Do not rest on someone else's laurels.
Get out and get your own relationship with Him. Don't rely on those gone before.
He wants to know you, Do you want to know Him?
