set aside

In the Old Testament there is an anointing of oil as a way to set aside a person place or thing for God. There is a specific recipe for anointing oil in Exodus 30:23.

Exo 30:23  Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
Exo 30:24  And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
Exo 30:25  And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Now just after this it says that anyone duplicating this shall be put out of Israel. God wants it to be unique to Him and to Him alone.
There is a recipe for perfume to be used in the Tabernacle.

Exo 30:34  And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:
Exo 30:35  And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:
Exo 30:36  And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.

Again God says that no one is to copy it for any purpose other than what He has said.

Exo 30:37  And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD.

You know what this tells me?
God wants some things set aside for Him and Him alone so that He is special and unique in our minds.
He wants the finest lambs for the sacrifice, He wants the first fruit of all your increase, He wants your time and talent.
Why? Does He need them?
No He does not He is God.

Well if He doesn't need it then why is He asking it of us?
If He truly does not need a thing we have, then why does He ask it of us?
If we .the created have. anything to offer to the creator what is it? We can do nothing He Himself cannot do. We can not stand without Him, we can not talk without Him, We can not live without Him.
Then what shall we say it is that He wants from us?

Does He not have the angels to do His Will? His every desire want and need fulfilled by beings who are far superior to us?
Does He not have the world and all that is upon it to worship Him? The whales, the lions, the horses the majestic buffalo, the wise owl, the elephant and the rhinoceros?

All far greater than the rebellion known as humanity. So why does God need man?
What possible reason is there for us to be? What possible thing is it that we might be better able to do than the angels, or the animals or the fish of the sea?

Psa 8:3  When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
Psa 8:4  What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Psa 8:5  For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

David asks the question, Samuel answers it for him.

1Sa 12:24  Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

I started this off with the anointing oils and perfume God required of the Israelites. And yes I took the long way around but we are now back to this point.
God wants things set aside, God wants things solely for Him from us. God wants to be special and unique in our thinking. In our actions. He wants everything we do to be centered around and for Him.

Samuel.
John the Baptist.
They were set aside from their youth for God and He used them greatly.

God does not just want you to set things aside.

God wants you to be set aside and solely His. He has died for you, He has provided for you. Now He asks that you be His. Period.
No other Gods before you. No other thing between you and Him. No family, no car, no money, no work, no food, nothing is to come before God in your life.

2Co 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
2Co 6:18  And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

God will be your God and you shall be His son or daughter. Come out from among them, set yourself aside for the Lord. Be Holy, Be consecrated, be unique unto the Lord.

God does not need us, yet He wants us to be His. From the time we wake in the morning until our eyes close at night, He wants you to be His in thought and in deed.

Gen 5:24  And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

God wants us to walk with Him, To talk with Him, He wants to fellowship with us. He wants to spend time with us, discussing us and our plans, Discussing Him and His plans.
He doesn't want to be just a wish list receiver, He wants to be a fellowshipper with man.
He wants your thoughts your desires made known, and He wants to make known His thoughts and His desires that we might know Him and do His will.

Your God is a  jealous God, He wants you to be His and His alone.
Set yourself aside that you may be Holy and Righteous as He is Holy and Righteous.
