We all know the story of David and Bathsheba.
We know the story of Absalom and his rebellion against his father.
But do you know of Ahithophel?
2Sa_11:3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
2Sa_23:34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,
The first verse tells of Bathsheba and her dad. The second tells of her granddad Ahithophel.
Ahithophel was the most trusted and wisest of David's advisers, He was also one of King David's longest serving supporters.
He was there in the bad times, hiding in caves running from Saul.
He was there in the good times giving good counsel and serving faithfully.
Then one day he finds out that King David took his granddaughter Bathsheba and defiled her and had her husband killed.
His good friend, God's anointed had betrayed him, Had ruined his granddaughter, had taken away one of his most precious things. His grand baby.
When Absalom started his uprising Ahithophel was called by Absalom to serve Absalom and Ahithophel went. He served Absalom a short time, and gave him advice. However, his advice was unheeded due to a friend of David's Hushai speaking and kept Absalom from listening.
When Ahithophel saw his counsel wasn't being heeded he went home and hung himself.
He had his family ruined through David's act, he saw his counsel - the wisest and most trusted of men wasn't being listened to. He had lost his family, his purpose, to give counsel, and hung himself.
How long did he have this boiling under the surface? The overt act of David left him empty bitter and he had a burning lump in his chest, then Absalom comes along and gives him a cause. A righteous quest.
Truly a tragic story, but the tragedy is not in the ending for we all will die lest Christ returns first.
The tragedy is in the burning lump in his chest. it smoldered and burned against the king. Instead of confronting David, I presume because David was the king and God's anointed, instead of removing himself from the situation, or recusing himself from service He chewed on that hurt like a cow chews a cud.
He kept it right in the forefront, nursed it, fed it and soon became obsessed with it and when the right moment came he struck back. An action that led him to take his own life.
Are we not even guilty of this today?
We get hurt or slighted and we nurse that grudge. We let it build up and harden us until we are so far gone we make a bad choice to get even thus causing us tragedy and hurt.
This is a compelling story. It is a modern day soap opera. honestly we couldn't make this stuff up.
So what is the lesson we learn of this?
Mat_18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
Who is thy brother? Who is thy neighbor?
If any have an issue with you or you with them, get it out. don't let it fester.
The love of Christ, the mercy of God has given us forgivenss unbounded. How can we do any less for our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Life is too short, love is too strong. Forgive, live and let go.
Someone may do something that takes a direct hit on you, your family, your finances. Remove yourself from them, or approach them and get it off your chest.
Don't let them have the victory over you. Don't let them take away your joy. Don't give them the satisfaction of one moment of your time bearing a grudge.
You are a child of the King. He shall repay. He shall bestow blessings or withhold them.
Rom_12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
What ever is boiling beneath the surface, it's not good. That negativity will affect you in many ways. Let it go.
