Joh 3:26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
Joh 3:27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
Joh 3:28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
Joh 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
Joh 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
Joh 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
Joh 3:32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
Joh 3:33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
Joh 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
Joh 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
John was bearing witness of Christ and to Him. John the Baptist is not a major character as far as time devoted to him in the scriptures. Yet he speaks frankly and honestly about his purpose.
He is the messenger sent before The Christ to prepare the way.
He knows that upon Jesus' ministry beginning that his ministry is on the decrease. He does not get bitter, instead he understands that all must come from God and the purpose of each individual is singular and of a particular importance.
He rejoices in the fulfillment of the prophecy, in the coming of the Messiah.
John does not see his ministry as less, just that his purpose was fulfilled. He came to point the way. He was not the way, he was not the ultimate but the penultimate.
He was not the end but the means to the end.
For as all Royal Persons are announced before they enter a room, so was the Christ announced before His arrival.
Christ came from THE Royal family. His personage is as none other before or after.
John was the trumpet to announce the coming of the Messiah.
Even so do we have our calling.
To prepare the way for the Messiah wherever we go.
To give the Glory to our God as we are allowed a small part in His Will, in His purpose.
To rejoice in those who serve God.
Not to be bitter, Not to snipe and gossip, But to share in the Glory of God and the furtherance of His Kingdom.
Every thing we do should be part of The Kingdom, not subversive but honest and open in tandem with the others doing God's work.
John was grateful that Christ had come and that he {John} was allowed to do his part. He was the witness and the messenger.
Can we do any less?
We must be about the work assigned to us from Our God.
We must testify of the things we have seen and heard.
We are not the end but the means of pointing to the end. The Gospel of Christ crucified.
When one has success in the furtherance of the Gospel, let us be like John and know that to God be the glory.
We can do nothing unless it be given us from heaven. No personal glory. Make of ourselves no repute.
For truly in and of ourselves we will fail.
It is only through the Holy Spirit and His work that any heed the Word of God. It is only through God's Word that men are called.
We may be used as the messenger, we may point the way. But only through God's power is there any fruit.
To God be the Glory.
