We all have these things in our lives that we have to deal with on an hourly or minute by minute basis.
Greed, lust, drinking, bitterness, jealousy, envy, hate, laziness, selfishness, anger, indifference, lying or what we consider the "big" ones adultery, immorality, murder, gambling, robbery.
Buying that powerball ticket indicates a lack of faith in God's ability to provide, That one beer where someone who looks up to you sees and says well if they can do it can't I? not forgiving your ex who betrayed you, God wants you to forgive as He forgives. Lying to your boss, taking that one little thing it won't be missed. Jealous of your neighbor, lusting after things or people that are not yours, be content with what you have, what God has provided for you.
Besetting sin or habitual sin is an insidious thing. It will make you a shell of who you are/were. It will eat away at you from the inside out. It will rob your joy, steal your happiness, make you jaded and myopic.
It will hamper your relationship with God. It will ruin your testimony. It will make you stop seeking God as you nurse your private little sin, keeping you from being all you can be for Him.
God knows we are human, He knows we will stumble along our way as we try to walk with Him. He knows that we will fall short of His purity, His holiness.
He does not expect us to stay in that state though. He wants us to recognize and repent. Stumble, yes, lay down and give in? No. Give up? No.
We have a God who will seek His lost children, who will seek those that go astray.
Luke 15:3-5King James Version (KJV)
3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
God does not want the separation caused by sin, He wants a full relationship with His children. He wants a full and complete relationship with us that we may experience all that is out there for us, That we have the inner joy and peace the happy satisfied child of God should have.
1 Peter 2:1-3King James Version (KJV)
1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
God is willing that all come to repentance. That all should/would know His Grace, His forgiveness that we may have His Joy and His companionship in our daily walk.
He has given the cure for any and every sin there is. We on the other hand many times fail to recognize this sin, or fail to let go of our "pet" sin because we are petty self-centered individuals. We want to harbor our grudges, keep nursing it, feeding it.
The Lord's model prayer gives us not just a prayer model but a full life model.
Matthew 6:9-13King James Version (KJV)
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
Matthew 6:9-13King James Version (KJV)
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever. Amen
God gave us all the answers, the choice is ours.
In all reality it is always just that: a choice.
Feed the spirit the right way, the right food and we shall overcome.
Focus on God, His Word, His Will and His Way. That is the key to victory over besetting/habitual sin.
Even the sin that we do not see in ourselves. By walking daily with Him, He will show us how to grow closer to Him. How to overcome.
