21Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. 22And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? 23But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me
David is in trouble. He got to this point because of his sin, his actions. He committed murder, adultery, and he got others involved in it with him to cover it up.
He has, because of his actions, been judged and lost a child.
The remarkable thing about this is his acceptance of God's will.
While the child was alive David fasted and prayed and abased himself before God.he was trying to beg forgivenesses,
To ask the Lord to "take this cup from me" if you will.
However, once he knows there is nothing he can do to change God's will he accepts it and moves on. He is aware that though God judged him, and God took the child, the ultimate responsibility lies with David and his actions.
The other remarkable thing is that David knows he will see the child again. That there is a reunion for the saints of God. This whole account just makes me admire not his sin, nor his humanity but his faith and his belief in God.
David messed up, he paid for it as did the others around him, but he knew that God could forgive him and there was a better day coming.
