Mat 9:1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
He being Jesus, came unto His own city, Jesus of Nazareth, His city is Capernaum.
Mat 9:2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
Something unique here, for their faith His sins were forgiven. How did that happen? The sick man, sick of the palsy had the faith to be brought out in this condition. The friends had the faith to bring Him and do whatever it took to get Him to Jesus, yet the man of the palsy had to be willing to do it if not be the main driver of such a feat. His faith made him whole, their faith got him there, his faith made him whole. Jesus says "Thy sins", not theirs, his. Interesting. Do you think they knew Jesus already?
Mat 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
Never an account is fully an account until the sceptics show up and make sure to throw cold water on the embers of the people's hearts getting on fire. He blasphemed because He forgave sins, yet when He had the man rise and walk what did they do? Where were their accusations then?
Mat 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
Jesus hearing their thoughts, their silent thoughts, not spoken words, this should have made them doubly sure He was of God yet no, they didn't quite hear Him. Yet though they accused Him silently, He brought it out in the open as He does with all sin.
Mat 9:5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
Mat 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
Mat 9:7 And he arose, and departed to his house.
Miracles abound here.
1. Sins forgiven (yes that should always be counted a miracle, a joy filled miracle).
2. Jesus hears thoughts and sees the hearts.
3. The man rises and walks.
4. The people rejoice and praise God. This power was of God, the people knew it and rejoiced.
5. The Scribes were shut up and shut down in their protestations. (They always had something to judge yet they were quieted).
Mat 9:8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Yet again the people rejoice while the religious look at it as a defeat. For God was among the people and the people glorified Him, they didn't quite understand that He was fully God, but they glorified God and correctly laid the credit at God's feet. They rejoiced, they marveled, they glorified God through Jesus' Power.
So many times in the NT there is a Jesus shown healing, forgiving sins, raising the dead. All the Power of God fully on display and the people loved Him for it, yet the religious leaders never once defined Him as God. They saw a threat, not a savior. What a difference in perspective between the people and the leaders of the people. Are you truly a leader if no one follows?
