have you ever wondered why God called Jonah to Nineveh?
God, knowing Jonah would rebel, knowing, he did not want to go, knowing the troubles and trials involved, called Jonah?
Have you ever asked yourself why Jonah ran? Knowing God was everywhere and knew everything, why then did he run? He was a prophet, therefore he was aware of the God of the universe, he knew that God would know this and would know where to find him at all times.
Why God called and set aside Samson knowing the travesty that would ensue?
Why God called Gideon? Knowing the sin in the later years of his life that Gideon would fall into?
Have you ever questioned why these people?
Gideon got caught up in the celebrity and fell into polygamy, made an ephod of gold that caused Israel to sin the sin of idolatry.
Samson, well we all know the circus of his life.
Why did God call these men? they were sin filled, they were inadequate, they were reluctant, they were not the ones you or I would have chosen.
Why did God not call one of the Religious elite? or a warrior elite? Why did God call these men? God knowing all the trouble before and after that these men would cause, knowing the idolatry that would result, knowing the handicaps they had, knowing their objections, why would He use them?
Why did He call Saul who was persecuting the church, murdering the christians, that would take years to train, a whole history to overcome? Why didn't He just use Cornelius who was searching for Him, who had a heart for God and a position of power to increase the faithful?
Have you ever asked why God used these men?
I know that it seems odd to me that this is who He called and used.
He used a harlot to save the spies in Jericho. Rahab,
He used a shepherd boy to make all Israel great. David,
He used a wine steward to restore Jerusalem. Nehemiah.
He used a fisherman to preach on the day of Pentecost. Peter.
Are you sensing a theme here? It strikes me as very odd.
Even in the last few hundred years He has taken men and women we would never think of to win this world for Him.
1Co_1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
I know this says God uses the foolish things, that we are supposed to say in a mystical knowing voice "God works in mysterious ways".
Yet still I wonder, perplexed at the choices, Yes I know God sees the heart and chooses men by that, but even still I wonder at this
Yet this does give hope to those of us who are serving and are not the most educated, are not the richest, or the most influential.
We know God wants the glory and therefore He doesn't send those who can attribute their success to anything other than Him.
I guess the purpose of this is nothing more than to assure ourselves that God can the use the unusable (in our opinion), that seeing the results, the end results, of these men being called, we too can rest assured that God knows what He is doing even when we do not understand it.
If you have a calling from God and don't understand why He would call you, why He would send you, remember we would not have chosen these men for their specific calls either.
If you have the call of God on you, then go. It will not make sense to us, it will not make sense to any. The Power of God is not given to the powerful, it is given to those who know they need Him to do anything. The Spirit is the the One who gets things done through us, not us. He does it not because of us, but in spite of us.
There is a God, and He loves us, He sends those to us that we need not the ones we expect, nor the ones we think worthy.
Why these? Because God found them worthy, and if that doesn't lift you up, that He found you worthy of the call, then there is no lifting you.
If God has called you, Stand. For He has found you worthy despite what man says, and thinks. Despite your fears, doubts, and misgivings He has called you.
Why these? That is what men say.
God says why not these.
