I was somehow or another thinking of corn husks the other day. No idea why or how but I was.
The husk of the corn, the leaves, provide protection, grows with the ear of corn, has uses of it's own. They are edible, used as wrappers, used as decor eyc.
Yet they are mostly the source of the ear of corn that is wrapped inside.
That made me think of the husks that we inhabit. These bodies that our spirits inhabit are useful for many things too but they are not the sole objective.
We dress them up, we use them to protect the inner spirit but the husk or body is not the goal.
The spirit is eternal, the husk is temporary.
Whatever we do to the body will fade. Whatever we do to the physical does not defile us. it is the spirit that must remain pure and godly.
Christ spoke of this, it is not what goes into the temporary husk that defiles a man but what comes out of the heart.
Mat 15:16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Mat 15:17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
Mat 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
Mat 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Mat 15:20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
Paul also spoke of the temporary husk.
1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
1Co 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
This temporary husk shall fade and wither unless Christ comes first. We are so wrapped in the beauty and comfort of this husk.
The husk has it's uses but should not be the focus. Just like the golden ear of corn that gives us sustenance, our Spirit should be our main focus.
It is the part of us that will one day move on and leave this cursed sin filled body behind. It is important to care for the body, but it should never be the focal point.
In the long term the body will mean little. few are remembered for their beauty, many are remembered for their actions whether good or bad.
The spirit and the heart of man is a thing of greatness, or a truly ugly thing to behold.
Don't let the husk be what drives you, it is the spirit that should be polished up and on display. For that is what shall one day be all you truly are.
